Major/Minor: Youth Ministry – major, Mathematics - minor
“It is important to have good leadership on campus. Without it, the campus wouldn't be the way it is today.”
Youth ministry became a passion for Jeremy Humphrey while attending King College, where he was a member of the Tornado baseball team. Humphrey participated in a number of other activities at King which only strengthened this passion, and ultimately, led him to pursue youth ministry as a career. His involvement with Liston Devos, a weekly student-led worship service, was particularly inspiring during his time at the college.
“One of the most important activities to me was Liston Devos because it has been a student-led tradition at King for more than 20 years, and it is a great time for fellowship, worship, and devotion. Another important one was being a resident assistant (RA) on campus for one year. It is important to have good leadership on campus. Without it, the campus wouldn’t be the way it is today.”
As a student, Humphrey chose organizations and activities geared particularly toward his career goals with the desire to gain more experience for his future. His internship as a part-time youth pastor at a local church was an obvious part of this preparation, but Humphrey sees specific learning opportunities in other ventures at King College as well.
“The chapel band helped me to be organized and experienced in leading worship, while Liston Devos aided in developing my thoughts and views on Christian fellowship. All of the youth ministry events helped me gain knowledge about how to run a variety of outreaches and events, and serving as an RA developed me as a person through working with others, while at the same time, being responsible for them.”
The Bristol native was also grateful for the opportunity to obtain his bachelor’s degree while staying close to home.
“I wanted to stay in the area because I love it here. King has small classes, so I could easily meet with my professors if I needed. My favorite experience at King is the spiritual development that takes place. All of the students come in with a set pattern of beliefs and values, but when we are away from our home, we develop our own values and beliefs. It is a change for the better because we are not relying on what other people think, but what we think as an individual.”
